My First Steps Into Yoga & Meditation

I’ve always been curious about yoga and meditation, but for some reason, I never gave myself the time or space to begin. I am curious to see how my health, both physical and mental, will develop during my journey. Will I feel a genuine impact in my daily life, and if so, how? Can yoga and meditation be a resource I use for stress relief, anxiety, and other challenges I face? I am excited to analyze the changes and progress I will undergo during this experiment.

Before starting, I spent some time reading and learning about what yoga and meditation are really about, instead of what is often assumed.
One of the first things I learned is that yoga is not just about poses or flexibility. It’s about union of the body, mind, and breath, which is also the meaning of the word “yoga”. It’s a way of being. This idea made yoga feel more approachable and meaningful to me.
One article I read reminded me to start with acceptance and let go of expectations. I don’t need to be flexible, or have special clothes or gear. I just need to show up as I am. This was comforting and motivating, and it helped me realize that this journey is not about perfection, but being present.

Breathwork, called pranayama, is a very big part of yoga and meditation. Even just noticing your breath is powerful. I have meditated a few times in the past, and breathing is an important part of staying present and grounded during those moments. Even in my day to day life, I am trying to pay more attention to my breath, which feels like a meaningful step.

Here’s how I’m planning on getting started:

  • Try some beginner-friendly online yoga classes
  • Practice short daily breathwork or meditation
  • Explore attending an in-person yoga class in the future

I’m not trying to pressure myself at all, or set unrealistic standards. My main goal is to learn about yoga and how to better myself through my practice.

I really want yoga and meditation to be activities I continue with throughout my life, so starting slow and with intention feels right for me.

See you in the next post,
Katie
