Creative Commons and Open Education Session
After watching this session about open education and Creative Commons, I’m honestly a little shocked I hadn’t heard more about them before. The idea that people can freely access and share educational resources is amazing! Not to mention it’s all legal, flexible, and meant to be shared. However, the fact that this exists and that it’s not more known, is upsetting.
Open education is all about making learning materials, such as textbooks, videos, or full courses, free and accessible. Also, from a teaching and learning perspective, instead of keeping knowledge restricted or only available to certain institutions, open education makes it accessible to everyone. It’s more collaborative, inclusive, and more exciting. But what really stood out to me was Creative Commons. It offers different types of licenses so people can choose how their work is used, while still making it useful and available to others around the world. I think it’s so cool that there’s flexibility, and that you can pick what works best for your needs.
I still can’t believe I didn’t know about this earlier, but I’m grateful I do now. I will definitely be using, and encouraging, open educational resources from now on.
